The website ‘Uncover Colonial Traces’ focuses on two colonial monuments in Germany, which represent Hermann von Wissmann, a brutal commissar, and governor of German East Africa. The two monuments also represent German colonial policy, the exploitation of African countries, and the first genocide of the 20th century. While the monument in Hamburg was toppled by students in 1968, the other one still stands in the same place in Bad Lauterberg for more than 100 years. The website explores, based on a timeline, the similarities and differences with how the two monuments were viewed and how they were instrumentalized to reinforce National Socialist ideologies.
